Mastering wardrobe wobbles during life changes
Updated: Oct 6

When your wardrobe starts to feel disconnected
You open your wardrobe, it’s full of clothes, pieces acquired over time, but very few of them that you are actually excited to wear.
Something feels disconnected.
You’re not beginning your day dressing yourself in a way that makes you feel good, aligned and ready to be visible.
The ‘I don’t know what to wear moment’… the frustration … and the thoughts that you’ve lost your style or never even had one!
Yet, there’s a nagging feeling that there could be more to your style…
Wardrobe wobbles point to potential
The women I work with are often leaning into change in their life. Something is shifting in their work, relationships or lifestyle and new light is being shed.
How they see themselves, and how they want to show up in the world is evolving.
And there’s that moment of the in-between… the discomfort that comes with growth, which shows up in our wardrobes too.
So, start to see the wardrobe wobbles as information. If you’re in a moment of evolution, it is very common to find that some clothes that worked for past versions of you, no longer sit quite right.
You’ve changed and your wardrobe just hasn’t caught up with you yet.
Why dressing like you damn well mean it matters?
Style goes deeper than just putting clothes on our body. What we wear effects how we feel about ourselves, how we think about ourselves and how we show up in the world.
If you are stepping into new chapters, starting to dress like you damn well mean it is powerful! A simple way to feel confident, aligned and more like yourself….. yes, it goes deep!
What this looked like for Winnie
When I met my client Winnie she was 5 years in to her purpose-led business. She was seeing real traction and invites were coming, panel talks, networking and speaking engagements. They were great opportunities but she was tired of second guessing her outfit choices.
She had only ever wanted to be herself and dress in an authentic way in her business, so she wore the same clothes at work as she did outside of work, but she was no longer feeling as confident in what she wore. She knew something needed to change, but she didn’t know where to begin.
As we worked together, we began to uncover what was already there, the pieces that she was drawn to, what felt like her and how she wanted to show up in this next stage of her business. She began to get clarity around how she wanted to show up in her professional life.
From there we could be much more intentional about evolving it. It wasn’t about creating a separate work wardrobe or dressing her up as someone she wasn’t. It was about building on her existing style so that it could support the greater visibility and opportunities that were now coming her way.
Instead of second-guessing what to wear, she now knows how to show up in her work life feeling confident and completely like herself. As her confidence in her style grew, she started to enjoy the process of getting dressed.
Start with curiosity, not a whole new wardrobe
If you’re in a moment of change and getting dressed is feeling harder, start small and be curious. How do you want to feel in your clothes? What styles do you feel drawn to? You likely don’t need a whole new wardrobe, but some clearly defined direction to understand, edit and build on your wardrobe going forward will be a game changer.
Take inspiration from celebrities, influencers, trends and other people’s wardrobes, but remember that true style starts from within, and is unique for all of us. Getting to know what YOU truly love is the focus. What genuinely catches your eye, speaks to you or lights you up? Get curious and start to experiment with small changes that grow over time. One small intentional change to an outfit e.g. adding a belt, can be enough to shift the way a whole outfit looks and feels.
Capture the spark
Whenever something catches your eye capture it. It could be a colour, shape, piece of clothing, silhouette or detail. The clue will be in the way it makes you feel… spacious, excited, curious… this is what we want more of! Create a board on Pinterest, a note on your phone or whatever will keep your inspiration in one place. You don’t need to know how you would wear any of it right now. Explore, don’t over think. This first step is all about starting to build inspiration to reference as you let your style evolve with you.
Sometimes the wardrobe wobble isn’t the problem, it’s an invitation to step more fully into who you’re becoming.
